About this Standard
The Instructions of the General Regulations to Promote and Regulate Organic-Ecological-Biological Production in Ecuador have the objective of establishing a general framework to promote and regulate the production, processing, sales, labelling, storage, promotion and certification of organic products of agricultural origin, including aquaculture, in Ecuador.
Currently, national organic certification is mandatory for any operation that is part of the organic product value chain in the country and is evaluated through third-party audits carried out by certification bodies that are locally accredited by the SAE (Ecuadorian Accreditation Service) under the NTE INEN-ISO/IEC 17065:2013 and that are registered with AGROCALIDAD. Likewise, all operators must request their POA registration code from the authority, granted to each certified operation or in transition, which facilitates the identification of all operators, products and processes evaluated in the country and must be present on all product labels, even if the product is for export.
Why choose this Standard?
National regulations have made it easier for organic production not only to be available in the local market but also internationally, being its main export markets the United States and the European Union.
According to consumption, 190 fresh organic products and 374 processed products are currently certified, of which Ecuador exports: bananas and banana puree (47.30%), cocoa beans and their derivatives (10.80%), oil palm (3.10%), broccoli (1.90%), coffee (0.93%), mango (0.13%). Among other export products are quinoa, panela, chocolates, chips, sauces, tilapia, shrimp and dehydrated fruits. While for local consumption, there are products such as kidney tomatoes, lettuce, carrots, coriander, radishes, aromatic herbs, fruit oils, beans, honey, yogurt and milk.
